Praying for Post-Abortive Women: Day 7 of 40 Days of Prayer

Dear Christian Sisters,

My friend Heidi is so gracious to pray for women who have had abortions.

I, too, pray that post-abortive women will receive God’s healing not just because it’s the right thing to do but because healing will help end abortion.

Forty-five percent of women aborting in 2014 reported having had at least one prior abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute (funded by Planned Parenthood).

I contend that it’s easier to have a second abortion because we’re already dead inside from the first abortion. I would’ve had another abortion if Russ hadn’t introduced me to Christ.

If women receive healing sooner, they may not have another abortion. Think about the reduction in numbers of abortions if we got women healed early.

At the end of the prayer, I’ll provide resources so that you know where to guide women who tell you they’ve had an abortion.

Gracious Lord Jesus,

Today I pray for the mothers. Many differing reasons propel a woman through the clinic doors. Some are ill informed, some don’t care, some feel they have no other options, some feel pressured. Today I’m remembering the women who have made the choice and then come to deeply regret it.

Father, I can imagine that there is no other heartache that strikes more to the core, no grief more crushing, no sorrow that shrouds more deeply, and no pain that stings longer.

We lift them up to you, Father. Hold them and hear them, forgive them, whisper your grace and tender love into their waiting ears, refresh their souls. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God. Wash them in it, Lord. Give them peace.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace and salvation, who bring good tidings. Thank you, Lord God, for post-abortion counseling, available at many pregnancy centers.

Lord, thank you for these women who are trained to help women deal with the overwhelming flood of emotion that follows their decision, even if it’s years and years later. Bless them as they go about your work of healing, redeeming, and binding up.

Heavenly Father, we beg you again. Please change the laws across our nation. Restore our dignity. Rescue the babies and Give mothers the courage and means to say yes to life. We long to magnify your glory and we long to see you end this horrifying era of abortion in the United States.

We ask it in the name of Jesus,
Amen.

Post-abortion healing classes are offered through pregnancy centers and some churches using curriculum like Surrendering the Secret and Forgiven and Set Free. The Catholic Church offers Project Rachel.

Men who have pressured a woman, drove her to the clinic, or paid for the abortion need healing, too. Some pregnancy centers offer classes for them as well. A common curriculum is Healing a Father’s Heart.

Day 6 of 40 Days of Prayer

Dear Christian Sisters,

My apologies for not getting this prayer to you this morning. I have a sick boy in the house, so I’ve been busy making chicken soup and cuddling.

Let us continue to pray with my friend Heidi for a turn in the abortion-mindedness of our country.

Lord,

The media is shifting away from the abortion topic, even the conservative media. I guess it’s okay because they are news outlets and their job is to report the news, not lament tragedies.

I see a smidge less traffic on social media regarding this topic, too. People’s minds are moving on. There is an unending list of things to pray for, be passionate about, and bring to public awareness. The adversary is prowling around, after all, looking for someone to devour.

But I refuse to let this die. There are too many deaths already, and the battle rages on, day in and day out.

Kindle in us, Oh Lord, the energy and passion, the creativity and ability to speak and to move. Give us the battle plan and motivate your people.

Our strength comes from you, our hope is in you and all we ask is for mercy. For the babies.

And for the mothers, and the fathers, and the abortion providers, and for the general mindset of the average Joe, we ask for your mercy for them all. Turn the tide of our death and doom culture into one that cherishes the goodness of life, celebrates wisdom and good choices and finds joy in putting the needs of others first.

You, Lord God, specialize in redemption stories. Stories of miraculous healing and bringing hope and life out of the ashes.

We’re dwelling in the ashes and we desperately need regenerating. Humble our hearts, Lord, and cause your people to pray. We long to see the end of this bloody era of carnage. Lord, please.

In Christ,

Cheryl

40 Days of Prayer: Day 5

Dear Christian Sisters,

Let’s call out for healing! Please pray along with Heidi as one voice to the Lord.

Holy Lord God Almighty,

2,310 babies died brutal deaths in our country today. Today.

I found a website that counts them in real time.

All those particular fingerprints, maturing brains, fluttering eyelids, and thumbs in mouths will never see the light of day. Today, while we went about our normal Sunday, they have had their moments of panic and pain. They have been ripped and seared and murdered in levels of violence not seen elsewhere. It is mind numbing, and I find myself in another round of shock.

I just learned that NY is not alone in its quest to kill children, although NY seems alone in its desire to publicly celebrate the killing of children. The states with the most lenient abortion laws–up to birth– are Oregon, Vermont, Colorado, New Hampshire, the District of Columbia, Alaska, New Jersey, and New Mexico. If I feel sick to my stomach and emotionally overcome, Lord God, how much more offensive must it be to You.

We know you so well. We know You act in Love–You define yourself as Love. We’ve seen your answers to prayers. We know Your promises and Your goodness. We’ve experienced Your presence, and we live in the midst of Your mighty blessings. We also know your justice, graciously meted out on the cross for our sins, but also present in modern day culture. I can’t imagine a worse judgement than this slaughter of innocents.

If Your people who are called by your name will humble themselves and pray, if we seek your face, and turn from our wicked ways; then will You hear from heaven, and will forgive our sin, and will heal our land. Our land is in desperate need of healing, but we need humility, seeking, and turning just as badly. Cause Your people to humble themselves and pray, Oh Lord God, to make us more like You, and to bring an end to the era of abortion in the United States.

In the Mighty Name of Jesus we pray,
Amen

Let us also remember that for every baby killed, a woman’s vitality is drained away, and she probably doesn’t even know it. And then there are the men who pressured her or paid for the abortion or the moms and friends who supported her choice or the doctors who recommended aborting.

There are so many people involved, and they all need Christ. They all need healing.

Let us be Christ’s ambassadors, leading them to the healing faith of Jesus Christ. Can you imagine how loud a chorus of trumpets we’d be against the pro-choice movement? A trumpet choir of post-abortive women and men who regret their “choice” will not be silenced.

If you know someone who needs healing from an abortion, help them find a post-abortion healing class from your local crisis pregnancy center or church. Surrendering the Secret is the class that I took. Freedom on this side of healing is amazing!

In Christ,

Cheryl

40 Days of Prayer: Day 4

Dear Christian Sisters,

As we pray along with Heidi, we are also praying along with 40 Days for Life, which is the organization that loved Abby Johnson over the life line.

You can read (or listen to) Abby’s story in Unplanned,** which is also a movie that will soon be released on March 29. Put it on your calendar and go see it opening weekend!

Now let us continue to pray with Heidi for life!

Lord God Almighty,

We are rejoicing with Iowans who have scored BIG in this battle! Governor Kim Reynolds ratified a bill to make abortion after 6 weeks ILLEGAL, (except in the usual extreme cases). Since many women do not even know of their pregnancy by 6 weeks, You have just made Iowa a “sanctuary state” for the unborn. A safe haven for the innocent. We praise you, Father, for this refreshing victory.

Of course, lawsuits are planned and many are decrying the injustice of this action. The battle has likely just begun in Iowa and so we lift them up to You for safety, confidence, and bravery in the face of razor-sharp opposition.

But it isn’t enough just to limit abortion. We are begging You to make 2019 the complete end of the era of (legalized) abortion in the United States. It’s a big request, but You are bigger. It’s a huge paradigm shift, but you are capable of more. And of course, this one request is wrapped up in a whole lot more.

The end of the era requires a cultural transformation to value and celebrate LIFE at every level and in every form. We’re asking, Lord. We’re asking this massive thing because You are greater.

And we pray it in the precious Name of Jesus.
Amen

In Christ,

Cheryl

40 Days of Prayer: Day 3

Dear Christian Sisters,

Let’s continue to pray with Heidi. Let us remember that abortion affects the women and men who abort as well. I am testimony to that. Many women and men are testimony to that.

Lord God Almighty,

The shock is starting to wear off and lots of emotions are flooding in to take its place. Anger, depression, resolve, outrage. There is NEVER a medical reason for an abortion in the third trimester. You have blessed us with incredible medical care and babies can survive outside the womb at that point. It is murder purely for convenience, willful, premeditated, first degree murder. What has happened to our hearts that we as a nation think this is ok?

Lord, so many of us do NOT think this is ok, but we feel helpless and lack the power, know how, or the connections to do anything about it. And so here we are, banging on the doors of heaven, beseeching your mercy, looking for direction, begging for big changes. And many of us are crying out, “Here we are, Lord, SEND US!” We need a plan and the resources to work it. Our trust is completely in You and we wait for your direction.

May your glory fill the earth, and may we be agents of your glory. Save the babies—and their moms and dads–Lord Jesus and bring an end to the era of (legalized) abortion in the United States.

In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ we pray,
Amen

In Christ,

Cheryl

40 Days of Prayer: Day 2

Dear Christian Sisters,

Let us continue to pray as one voice as my friend Heidi leads us.

Heavenly Father,

Our hearts are still torn and shocked and we continue to grope about for some semblance of understanding. Nationwide, people are mourning, expressing outrage, blinking in bewilderment. How did we let this happen? How do we go from here?

Today I pray for the tiny ones, warm and at perfect rest whose mothers are entering the clinic. Those tiny ones whose mothers just don’t know–or are repressing the knowledge. I pray for your comfort to blanket these babies. Help them to not be afraid and to not feel the pain. Send your Spirit to mitigate the evil and to make the journey with them straight into eternity, so they are never alone.

Oh Lord of LIFE, your authority is total, and we lay ourselves before you. Please forgive us. Please remove this horror from our land and bring a swift end to the era of (legalized) abortion in the United States.

All the Glory be unto You, Almighty God.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen

In Christ,

Cheryl

40 Days of Prayer: Day 1

Dear Christian Sisters,

My friend Heidi is a prayer warrior. Her response to New York’s late-term abortion legislation and all the abortion news since then has been to pray. May we all be like her.

With her permission, I am sharing her prayers with you so that we may pray as one voice.

Lord Almighty,

The wind has been knocked out of us. The reality of the evil that has swept over and bound up this country for far too long is raw and real this day. The agenda moves forward. We watch agape as pink lights celebrate, CELEBRATE, the passage of a law allowing more of our babies to be butchered. And other states are contemplating similar measures. What is to be done?

While the snake slithers and laughs its bitter laugh, we come boldly to YOU, heavenly Father, grieving the terrified, agonized babies who die every day. How have we let this happen? How could we close our eyes and cover our ears? How could we let it fade into the background?

Our hands are bloody. Our sin is deep. But you, O Lord, you know. There is none like you. We need forgiveness and healing and a new direction. We need so much! Help us to pray. Hear us and forgive us. Show us the way forward, step by step.

We pray these things in the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.

In Christ,

Cheryl

National Day of Mourning

Dear Christian Sisters,

Today is #nationaldayofmourning over NY and other legislation for late-term abortions over the last month.

Let us mourn for our inaction that we would allow murder to be legal for 46 years throughout the USA and 49 years in NY.

Let us mourn for not valuing the sanctity of sex, your beautiful design for sex in marriage between one man and one woman.

Let us mourn that we have allowed others to teach about sex and reproductive rights when we should be teaching in The Church and in our homes.

We allowed this! Lord, we repent!

In Christ,

Cheryl

Movie Rated R for Abortion Scenes

Dear Christian Sisters,

The movie “Unplanned” is rated R for scenes of abortion. How ironic is that?

While the filmmakers were certain they were making a PG-13 film, the MPAA has informed them that it will, in fact, be rated R unless all scenes of abortions are removed or altered.

Check out the story by The Hollywood Reporter.

My opinion? If your children are receiving sex education, then they should see “Unplanned.” I will be taking my pre-teen and teen boys.

Be sure to check out the movie trailer, and put March 29 on your calendar as movie night.

In Christ,

Cheryl

God Wants His Daughters Back

Dear Christian Sisters,

As I said in my last post titled “Do Not Give Up Speaking Truth,” women who have had abortions are contacting me privately.

In all the recent controversy over late-term abortions, I see God revealing hearts and calling His daughters back to him.

Please receive them in love.

Why Is Our Response Important?

Our response to post-abortive women is important because:

  • Speaking truth in love is what Jesus did—as did my husband.
  • Speaking in love results in repentance, which results in healing and a restored relationship with Christ.
  • Restored post-abortive women can speak boldly about abortion in a way that others cannot and will become a loud trumpet that cannot be ignored.

Speak the Truth in Love

Jesus spoke the truth in love both to the woman at the well, resulting in many Samaritans hearing the Gospel, and to the woman caught in adultery, resulting in her accusers walking away, saving her life.

My husband also spoke the truth in love, and as result I chose personal faith in Jesus as the Christ, reconciled with God, and was healed. You’ll read about my hero in my upcoming book ReTested.

People who prayed outside Abby Johnson‘s Planned Parenthood clinic (40 Days for Life) also spoke the truth in love, as did her husband, resulting in her famously leaving her position as clinic Director and now speaking boldly for the pro-life movement. You can watch her story in the upcoming movie “Unplanned.”

My point? Speaking the truth in love results in people choosing Christ and His path.

Healing & Restoration

Your kind words may lead a woman to a post-abortion healing class offered through pregnancy centers and some churches using curriculum like Surrendering the Secret and Forgiven and Set Free. **

Healing comes through acknowledging one’s responsibility and confessing it to the Lord. For me, admitting that my abortion was my choice, not the result of others’ actions, was central to my repentance.

The same was true of King David in the Old Testament. After he committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband Uriah killed, he said:

When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away
Through my groaning all day long (Psalm 32:3).

Before I reconciled with God, I felt as David did:

My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer (Psalm 32:4b).

But both King David and I found freedom through confession:

I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I did not hide.
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”;
And You forgave the guilt of my sin. (Psalm 32:5)

Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquity.
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:9-10)

I also found a great deal of freedom from forgiving.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins (Matthew 6:14-15).

Perhaps you are not living a life of freedom, even though you never had an abortion. Whether you’ve had an abortion or not, take some time today to ask God how you have sinned and whom you have not forgiven. Then confess your sin and your anger.

Lord, I confess that I ___________________ and I should not have. I am sorry. Please forgive me. For I know what I did was wrong, and it is always before me. Against you have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Cleanse me, and I will be clean. Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness!

Lord, I blame ___________________(person’s name) for ______________________. Please forgive me for harboring bitterness and anger toward him/her. Lord, I forgive ___________________. Bless __________________ with every spiritual blessing.

I pray that the freedom you feel is as amazing as mine.

Healed people get excited to tell everyone what Christ did. Imagine the powerful evangelical force of healed and restored Christians.

Imagine the powerful evangelical force of healed and restored post-abortive Christian women!

Speaking Boldly

One of the private messages that I received this week from a post-abortive woman was a cry over New York’s late-term abortion.

I am crying, too. Not only are more babies going to die, but now we’re going to have even more women who are spiritually dead, bitter, and defending the pro-choice movement. They are going to need healing, too.

Now, imagine hundreds of healed, outspoken, post-abortive women who explain how abortion hurt them psychologically and spiritually.

Imagine every pro-choice argument—intended to be pro-women arguments—refuted by women who have had abortions.

Now that’s a trumpet band I want to hear!

“Cry loudly, do not hold back;
Raise your voice like a trumpet,
And declare to My people their transgression
And to the house of Jacob their sins” (Isaiah 58:1).

In Christ,

Cheryl
